Wi-Fi Marketing Numbers are Lies

All marketing is aspirational. Quoted throughput and user counts are hopeful at best. All IT professionals know this. In this episode, Tom Hollingsworth is joined by Kerry Kulp, Scott McDermott, and Mark Houtz as they discuss the inflated claims of marketing teams and how they factor into buying decisions. They also discuss how Wi-Fi compares to other technologies and why the enterprise experience is vastly different from the consumer perspective. Lastly, they provide some ideas for keeping a grasp on reality when it comes to working with Wi-Fi numbers.

Paessler’s PRTG Even Monitors The Weather

Scott McDermott got to hear from Paessler at Tech Field Day Extra at Cisco Live US this year. He had evaluated their PRTG monitoring solution before, but got a new appreciation of it from their presentation. PRTG supports a vast array of sensor, with up to 5,000 per VM supported. These can be typical metrics, but also support unusual metrics, like fan speed and even weather conditions. Scott was definitely impressed by the versatility.

What I’m Looking Forward to at Cisco Live 2017

Scott McDermott is in Vegas and ready to take on Cisco Live. In this post, he shares what he’s looking forward to at the event. This includes a trio of Tech Field Day Extra presentations from Paessler, OpenGear, and NetApp.

Exploring Mesh with an AP-205H

Scott McDermott takes a look at the HPE AP-205H access point that he got a look at from Wireless Field Day. While the device is versatile enough for a number of use cases, what Scott wanted to see is if he could use it to bridge all of his home media devices. He walks through all the steps of getting this setup, and what his impressions are. It might be a little overkill, but it definitely shows it’s a versatile piece of hardware!

Looking forward to Networking Field Day

Scott McDermott is coming back for Networking Field Day and gives an overview of all the companies presenting at this event. Most exciting is a recent update to his post, Forward Networks just came out of Stealth Mode on November 14th, and they’ll be giving a highly anticipated presentation on the November 17th!
